IJ4EU: grants for cross-border investigative journalism projects

This is an opportunity to secure up to EUR 50,000 for a journalistic investigation suitable for publication by European media.

Create content on any topic you believe is essential, from human rights to climate change or corruption. The grant will cover all production costs.

There must be an EU partner on the team. You will have half a year to implement the project.

The programme is provided by the International Press Institute in cooperation with the European Journalism Centre and the European Centre for Press and Media Freedom. This is one of the thousands of EU opportunities for Ukraine.

What do I get?

EUR 5,000-50,000 to cover:

  • Salaries and HR costs
  • Production
  • Travel costs
  • Translation 
  • Administrative costs
  • Participation in trainings and conferences related to investigative journalism and the theme of your research
  • Costs for technology or development of tools necessary for the investigation, except for the hardware
  • Expert consultations with lawyers, communication managers, etc.
Can I apply?

This competition is for print publishing, broadcasting, documentary filmmaking, and online media.

To apply for this grant, you need to have: 

  • A strong idea of cross-border investigation. You can find examples of projects previously supported by the grant on the website
  • A cross-border team of colleagues who will become your partners in the investigation. The team must include professionals from the EU, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Norway, or Serbia. These can be both officially employed journalists and freelancers
  • A bank account that can receive international payments from the EU

What do I need to apply?
  • Completed application form. Elaborate on the primary investigation idea, project timeline and potential risks
  • Project’s budget in euro
  • CVs — for individual applicants, code of conduct — for news organisations 
  • Letters of intent from at least two professional news outlets in two countries

How do I apply?

By 13 April, apply via an online portal in English.

You will know the results in a few weeks after the application deadline.

Good to know
  • You can submit several applications.
  • Journalists who apply as team members in multiple projects should ensure their working time is allocated to a full-time equivalent.
  • The grant can cover any percentage of the project.
  • You will receive money in euros to the team leader's bank account. You will have to pay the bank commission yourself.
  • The organisers will choose winners based on the project's relevance to the overall theme, novelty, expected societal impact, and geography.
