Gerda Henkel Fellowships for scientists
This is an opportunity to work on your research within the walls of the Center for Advanced Studies in Sofia for five months. You will have a monthly stipend of EUR 850 and time to write a piece on historical research in the social sciences and humanities. The organisers will provide a comfortable working space and access to all the centre’s facilities.
The fellowships are managed by the Center for Advanced Studies in Sofia with the support of the Gerda Henkel Foundation. This is one of thousands of EU opportunities for Ukraine.
- A five-month scientific residency at the Center for Advanced Studies for the winter (from 1 October 2024 to 28 February 2025) or summer (from 1 March to 31 July 2025) semester.
- A monthly stipend of EUR 850. You will also receive EUR 100 per month to cover research-related expenses.
- Free accommodation and up to EUR 800 to cover return tickets, visa and insurance.
- Access to the library and databases of the centre.
- EUR 1,200 to go on a research trip abroad.
This scholarship is for Ukrainian scientists who:
- Have the citizenship of Ukraine.
- Have a PhD degree in the field of Humanities or Social Sciences.
- Have international research experience: participation in scientific projects, conferences, publications in peer-reviewed academic journals, etc.
- Know English well.
The organisers will give preference to candidates under the age of 45.

- Description of the research project: purpose, methodology and bibliography — up to 2,200 words.
- Scan copy of PhD certificate.
- Two recommendation letters for scientists who defended their thesis over eight years ago.

This is the first stage. If your application is successful, you will be invited for an online interview in June 2024.
You will find out the results in July 2024.
- The organisers will prefer scientists who have not yet participated in this programme.
- This competition is also open to scholars from Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, China, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Turkey and Uzbekistan. Unfortunately, the organisers do not exclude the participation of russians.
