This is an opportunity for Ukrainian younger scholars to continue their research activities in one of the German universities. You will get a monthly stipend and reimbursement of the expenses on roundabout tickets, medical insurance, and a one-off study allowance. 

The programme can last between 7 and 12 months. You will receive funding from 1 October 2024 and can complete language courses before the research programme.

This is one of numerous DAAD opportunities funded by the German Federal Foreign Office. This is one of the thousands of EU opportunities for Ukraine.

What do I get?
  • A monthly scholarship of EUR 1,200 for doctoral candidates, and EUR 934, if you are not yet taking a doctoral degree
  • One-off study allowance you can spend on books, tickets to conferences, etc
  • Travel allowance
  • Health insurance 
  • An online or offline German language course 
  • Reimbursement of TestDaF or DSH examination fees if you take them after you get the scholarship
Can I apply?

This scholarship supports excellently-qualified graduates who:

  • Have completed a Master's degree, or are already taking a doctoral degree 
  • Plan to work on any research project except for human medicine, veterinary medicine and dentistry
  • Know the language of instruction of the desired study programme and have a language certificate to prove it
What do I need to apply?
  • Completed application form
  • CV in tabular form — up to 3 pages 
  • Letter of motivation — up to 2 pages 
  • List of publications
  • Detailed description of a research project you want to implement  — up to 10 pages. Please indicate how long you wish to receive funding
  • Schedule of planned research work
  • Confirmation from the academic host in Germany that it will provide you with a workplace
  • University degree certificate indicating final grades 
  • Other documents that might be relevant: proof of placements, etc. 

Note that all documents must be in PDF format. Please provide German or English translations for documents submitted in Ukrainian.

Good to know
  • You should find an academic host in Germany yourself. Choose a state-funded, state-recognised university or a non-university research institute, which is being carried out in agreement with a supervisor in Germany. 
  • You can get funding for a programme that lasts between 7 and 12 months. The selection committee will determine a funding period individually, considering your study plan.
  • You may apply if you completed your Master's degree no later than six years before the application deadline and started your doctorate no later than three years ago.
  • If your scientific research is in the arts, social sciences and law, you should have a good to excellent knowledge of German. Basic knowledge of German and good knowledge of English is required for the other fields. 
  • You may apply for the scholarship if you have been resident in Germany for longer than 15 months at the application deadline.
  • In exceptional cases, you can also get a monthly rent subsidy or allowance for accompanying family members.
