European grants for environmental journalistic investigations

This is an opportunity to make an environmental investigation jointly with a partner from the other member states of the Council of Europe. The funding will cover travel, visa, accommodation, translation, fixers, access to pay-databases, and other project related expenses. Also, you will get mentorship support if needed. 
 
Grants vary from EUR 2,000 to 20,000 per project, but there are no restrictions about the sum.

European Cross-Border Grants are carried out by Belgium based independent non‐profit organisation Journalismfund.eu. This is one of the thousands of EU opportunities for Ukraine.

  • Expenses for investigation covered
  • Costs for participation in trainings and conferences related to investigation journalism and theme of your research
  • Costs for technology or development of tools necessary for the investigation except of the hardware
  • Mentor’s consultations about cross-border collaboration, identifying sources, research methods, storytelling or other topics depending on your project needs
Can I apply?
To apply for this grant you need to have: 
  • Good idea of investigation about a cross-border environmental issue that concerns Europe
  • Professional experience in journalism
  • Partner in one of the member states of the Council of Europe. If you don’t have a partner yet, check out tips on the Journalismfund.eu website
 
Applicants can be both freelancers and news outlets officially incorporated at least one year before the deadline. 
 
What do I need to apply?
Completed application form that includes: 
  • Precise description of your project. Explain core conflict of the story, results of your preliminary research, provide your method, plan and expected timeline. 
  • CVs and copies of passports – for individual applicants,  articles of incorporation, annual financial statement and list of members of the board and senior management — for news outlets 
  • Letters of intent from at least two professional news outlets in two different countries
  • A detailed budget using budget template

Good to know
  • The result of your journalistic investigation can be published by a professional media outlet in any language. 
  • You will be informed about the jury decision at the beginning of December 2021.
