This is an opportunity to carry out half of your PhD at one of the major Belgian universities. You will start and end your research in Belgium and work in Ukraine in between. The programme covers two trips to Ghent and stipend while staying there.To apply, you must have prior commitments from the  supervisors in both universities.

What do I get?
  • Monthly stipend of EUR 2,252
  • The Ghent University PhD degree
 
The Ghent University supervisor also receives a budget of EUR 8,000 to cover the operational costs, as well as part of the travelling costs of the student and both the Ghent University and the local supervisor.
Can I apply?
This scholarship support PhD students from Ukraine who: 
  • Propose PhD research of a development relevance 
  • Have a supervisor at the Ghent University. You can check the list of faculties and research topics available here
  • Have a supervisor at the local university or research center in Ukraine
  • Are sufficiently exempted from teaching or other assignments as to be able to fully concentrate on the PhD research in Ukraine. Applicants can dedicate maximum 10% of their time to teaching and other tasks
What do I need to apply?
  • Application form completed in English. Provide the list of your scientific publications, theme and time schedule of the doctoral research, describe your motivation
  • Advice on the candidate, stating the supervisors opinion on the capability of the candidate as a future researcher
  • Advice on the ethical and biosafety context of the proposed research project. This document is submitted by the Ghent University supervisor. 
  • Statement from the Ukrainian university confirming that the candidate will receive a full time local PhD scholarship or salary for a period of 24 months 
  • Copies diplomas and transcripts of records
  • Ranking among fellow students and/or percentile score

How do I apply?

Good to know
  • In exceptional cases, if the Ukrainian university requires, you can start your research in Ukraine. Request an approval from Ghent University and provide your motivation and supporting documents.
  • The result of the selection will be announced online from 18 May 2022 onwards. 
  • The first research stay in Ghent needs to be started between 1 October 2022 and 28 February 2023.
  • Ghent university wants to encourage more female researchers to apply for this scholarship. That is why a Ghent University supervisor can support maximum two candidates per call on condition they are of a different gender.
